In the early morning hours in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, a dispute between neighbors escalated into a fatal encounter. Leroy Wallace, a 41-year-old male, was shot and killed. The incident began inside an apartment building on Thomas S. Boyland Street, where an argument is believed to have broken out between Wallace and his neighbor.
Following the sound of a gunshot, Wallace stumbled out of the building and collapsed on the sidewalk.
Emergency medical services were the first to arrive at the scene just before 6 a.m., where they found Wallace with a gunshot wound to the chest; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police officers who responded secured the area, finding a shotgun shell casing in the vestibule of the building, indicating the shooting had occurred indoors.
Approximately two hours after the initial shooting, the situation escalated further. As one officer stood guard over the evidence inside the building, the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Deshaawn Laro, opened the door to his first-floor apartment and fired a shotgun at the officer. The officer, Sharjeel Waris, was struck in the face with what was described as birdshot. Officer Waris returned fire, and Laro retreated into his apartment, barricading himself inside.
The New York Police Department's Emergency Service Unit was called to the scene. After attempts to make contact with Laro were unsuccessful, they breached a window and deployed a drone into the apartment. The drone footage revealed Laro motionless on the kitchen floor with a shotgun nearby. ESU officers then entered the apartment and confirmed that Laro was deceased. While it was initially unclear if the fatal wound was self-inflicted or from the officer's return fire, police later concluded that he was killed by the officer's shot as no shell casings were found in the apartment. Laro had no prior arrest history in New York City.
