In the early hours of March 6, 2021, the life of 19-year-old Reon Cambridge of Brooklyn, New York, was tragically cut short. He was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital after being dropped off in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound to his head just before 2:20 a.m. The young man, described by his family as fun-loving and sweet with no known enemies, was on the verge of graduating from Frontiers High School, a milestone he would never reach.
The investigation into the male's death
began under a veil of mystery as police worked to determine the location and motive behind the shooting. Hours before his death, Cambridge had attended a baby shower on Weirfield Street in Ridgewood, Queens. It was there that an altercation involving another guest set in motion the events that would lead to the fatal shooting.
In May 2021, authorities arrested 23-year-old Tajai Holman of Manhattan in connection with the murder. The investigation revealed that Holman had become upset with another guest at the party. At approximately 12:53 a.m., as this guest was leaving in a BMW with Cambridge in the passenger seat, Holman allegedly fired five shots at the vehicle, none of which hit their mark. About an hour later, the guest and Cambridge returned to the location of the baby shower. Holman then stepped in front of the car and fired five more times, striking Cambridge once in the forehead.
Following the shooting, Cambridge was driven to Brookdale Hospital and left there. The investigation, which began in Brooklyn where Cambridge was found, was conducted by the 67th Precinct. On December 17, 2024, a jury found Tajai Holman guilty of second-degree murder. Subsequently, he was sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Dineen Riviezzo to 19 years to life in prison for the senseless act of violence that turned a celebration of new life into a tragedy.
