In the early morning hours of January 18, 2014, a sense of promise hung in the air for 23-year-old Gerard Grant. A business student on the cusp of graduating from Kingsborough Community College and a budding event promoter, he was known for his charm and vibrant personality. That evening, he had been out, diligently handing out flyers for an upcoming Valentine's Day party. After leaving a nightclub on Flatbush Avenue, he and a friend were in his car in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Their destination was the home of a woman who had called for tickets to his event, but a GPS error led them to a dead-end street at the corner of Avenue I and East 16th Street. It was there, in the quiet residential street, that their journey took a horrific turn.
An unidentified gunman approached the vehicle and opened fire at close range. Gerard Grant, sitting in the driver's seat, was struck multiple times in the chest and head. His friend, in the passenger seat, was also hit, the bullets striking his spine and leaving him paralyzed. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4:17 AM, but it was too late for Grant. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
