The incident that led to her death occurred on July 13, 2024, in the drive-thru of a McDonald's on Daleville Avenue, near the entrance to Fort Novosel. Stephanie was in a vehicle with her husband, 45-year-old Rickey McCray, when an argument broke out between them.
Their relationship was described as being on-and-off, and they had reportedly discussed their relationship just hours before the fatal encounter.
As they were in the drive-thru line, the argument escalated. Witnesses inside the restaurant reportedly heard the couple's dispute through the intercom system. When Stephanie reached the pickup window, she made a desperate plea for help to an employee, stating that the man in her passenger seat had a gun and asking them to call 911.
