On a late summer evening in Brooklyn, the life of 41-year-old Derrick Garner was tragically cut short. On Monday, August 17, 2020, just after 10:30 p.m., police responded to a 911 call on Bainbridge Street near Lewis Avenue in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Upon arrival, they discovered Garner, a resident of East New York, with multiple gunshot wounds to his arm and torso.
Emergency responders rushed Garner to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, but his injuries proved to be
fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital. At the time of the incident, it was unclear what brought Garner to that particular area, which was about a fifteen-minute drive from his home.
