On a tragic autumn evening in Brooklyn, New York, a young man's act of kindness weeks earlier may have led to his untimely death. Kevin Virgo, a 27-year-old father, was fatally shot on November 2, 2018, in what police and witnesses believe was a targeted act of retaliation. The incident unfolded outside the Atlantic Boat Club in the Prospect Heights neighborhood, a place where Virgo had recently stood up for a waitress who was being harassed by a group of men.
About two weeks prior to
the shooting, Virgo had intervened in an altercation, defending the female employee from the advances of several patrons. His protective actions reportedly escalated to the point where he knocked one of the men out with a punch. While his bravery was commended by some, it also sparked fear among the club's staff that the men would eventually return to seek revenge.
Those fears were realized on that Friday night. According to reports, Virgo was lured out of the club by one man and led around the corner, where another individual was lying in wait with a firearm. The gunman opened fire, striking Virgo multiple times in the chest, stomach, and upper right thigh.
