On the evening of March 31, 2022, 12-year-old Kade Ashton Tyler Lewin, a male, was enjoying a meal in a parked car with his two cousins in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York. The innocent scene was shattered when a vehicle pulled alongside them at the corner of Linden Boulevard and East 56th Street, and gunfire erupted. A bullet struck Kade, tragically ending his young life.
His 20-year-old cousin was also wounded in the attack but survived.
Kade, who was a seventh-grade student at the Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy, was remembered by his family as a smart and funny boy who loved life. He had a passion for football, basketball, video games, and spending movie nights with his mother. In the wake of this senseless act of violence, the community came together to mourn the loss of a promising young life. Linden Boulevard was co-named 'Kade Ashton Tyler Lewin Way' in his honor, a permanent reminder of the boy who was taken too soon.
The New York Police Department believes Kade was not the intended target of the shooting. A reward of $10,000 has been offered for information leading to an arrest, as authorities continue to search for those responsible. Police have been looking for two black sedans that were seen fleeing the scene of the crime. Despite public pleas from Kade's grieving mother and the community for witnesses to come forward, no arrests have been made in the case. The family and community have held vigils and marches, not only to honor Kade's memory but also to take a stand against the gun violence that plagues their streets.
