On a warm summer evening in Brooklyn, New York, a beloved community celebration turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy, forever altering the lives of many. On July 27, 2019, 38-year-old Jason Pagan, a male, was attending the annual 'Old Timers Day' event in the Brownsville Playground, a gathering that typically brought together hundreds of community members for a joyous occasion.
The festive atmosphere was shattered when a verbal dispute escalated, leading to a senseless act of violence that would claim Pagan's life.
The confrontation that led to the fatal shooting began around 11 p.m. in the crowded park located at Hegeman Avenue and Sackman Street. During the argument, a man named Kyle Williams pulled out a firearm and shot Jason Pagan in the head and torso. The initial gunshots sparked a larger exchange of gunfire between rival groups present at the celebration. In the ensuing shootout, eleven other innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire and sustained injuries, turning a peaceful gathering into a mass shooting event.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the New York City Police Department launched an investigation. Tips from the community proved crucial in identifying a suspect. On October 16, 2019, Kyle Williams, then 23 years old and a resident of Brownsville, was arrested in connection with the murder of Jason Pagan. Kyle Williams was brought to trial and on April 20, 2023, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and first-degree reckless endangerment. On July 5, 2023, he was sentenced to 32 ½ years to life in prison.
