On a Wednesday evening in Brooklyn, New York, 22-year-old Carlik McClatchie was riding his bicycle in the Crown Heights neighborhood. It was around 7 p.m. on September 9, 2015, when violence erupted. As McClatchie rode on Albany Avenue, near Prospect Place, he was shot in the stomach. First responders rushed the young man, who was a resident of East New York, to Interfaith Medical Center, but his wound proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting,
the New York Police Department indicated that the attack did not appear to be random and that McClatchie was likely the intended target. He was a construction worker and the father of a four-year-old son. The shooting occurred outside the Albany Houses public housing complex.
Investigators quickly sought the public's help in identifying those responsible for McClatchie's death. They released surveillance video that captured five male suspects in the moments after the shooting. The footage showed the group, three of whom were visibly armed with handguns, running into the lobby of a nearby building. In the video, one of the men in a white T-shirt is seen crouching and looking out the windows. He is then joined by another man in a blue hat who appears to check a handgun. A third man in a Yankees cap, also armed, enters and crouches down, followed by a fourth individual in a red shirt. The group then signals to a fifth man, who runs toward the building. Despite the release of this footage and appeals to the public for information, no arrests in the case were announced in the days and weeks that followed.
