In the fall of 2021, a dispute that began in a neighborhood cafe in Brooklyn ended in the tragic death of 29-year-old Joseph Heredia. On the evening of October 30th, Heredia was walking home when he was fatally shot in the temple. The incident occurred in front of an apartment building at 248 Stanhope St. in the Bushwick neighborhood.
First responders from the 83rd Precinct arrived at the scene following 911 calls about the shooting.
Emergency medical services rushed Heredia to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead a short time later. Investigators believe the shooting may have been the result of a narcotics dispute and have noted that Heredia was an alleged associate of the Bloods street gang.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to a 16-year-old suspect, Ammaar Ali. Police went to Ali's home to speak with his mother. When Ali arrived and saw the officers, he and his mother voluntarily went to the 83rd Precinct stationhouse for questioning. Following the interview, Ali was arrested and subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Joseph Heredia's death.
