In the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bay Ridge, a violent altercation on the evening of September 7, 2018, ended the life of 23-year-old Grei Frasheri, a man of Albanian descent. The incident unfolded at approximately 6 p.m. near the intersection of 93rd Street and Fourth Avenue, where Frasheri was discovered unconscious and unresponsive on the sidewalk.
Initial reports from the scene were conflicting, with police first believing Frasheri had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the neck, an assumption based on the discovery of shell casings in the vicinity. However, the cause of death was later determined to be a result of stab wounds. Emergency medical technicians transported him to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Frasheri's death led to the arrests of two suspects. About a week and a half after the incident, on September 17, 2018, police apprehended 35-year-old Anthony Valenti of Gravesend. He was charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment. Authorities believed Valenti was the individual who had fired a gun at Frasheri, while a second assailant was responsible for the fatal stabbing.
A second arrest followed on September 24, 2018, when police took Eric Cruz into custody. Cruz faced more severe charges, including murder, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon for his alleged role in Frasheri's death. The motive for the attack was reported to be a dispute related to drug turf, with suggestions that Frasheri may have begun working for a rival dealer. Following the killing, Frasheri's family and friends mourned the young man, who was remembered for his contagious smile and caring nature.
