In the early morning hours of a summer day in Brooklyn, a barbecue filled with people turned into a scene of tragedy. On June 22, 2014, Donnell Nashaun Smith, a 26-year-old male, was at a gathering at 281 Powell Street in the Brownsville neighborhood.
Shortly after 2 a.m., violence erupted amidst the crowd, and Smith was shot in the head. When police arrived at the scene, they found him unconscious and unresponsive.
He was quickly transported to Brookdale Hospital, but his injury was too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses at the barbecue reported that while there had been no apparent fighting leading up to the shooting, there was a large crowd with heavy drinking. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the investigation was ongoing, but no arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified.
