In the early morning hours of July 5, 2018, the life of 28-year-old Khadeem Anderson, a male resident of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, was tragically cut short inside a Utica Avenue deli. Known affectionately as 'Boom' in his neighborhood, Anderson had just come from a Fourth of July barbecue and stopped at the 555 Deli & Convenience store with his girlfriend. While inside, he became involved in a verbal dispute with another man.
As Anderson turned to walk away from the escalating argument, the other individual drew a firearm and shot him in the back of the head. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but Anderson was pronounced dead inside the deli. He was a father, leaving behind a two-year-old son.
The New York City Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, releasing surveillance footage of the suspect to the public. The video showed a man in his 40s wearing a white t-shirt, multicolored shorts, white socks, and dark-colored sandals. Anderson's mother, Angeleta Lewis, made a heartfelt public plea for the man to surrender to the authorities. Friends and neighbors remembered Anderson as a well-liked and regular presence in the community and at the very deli where his life was taken.
Several months later, in November 2018, an arrest was made in connection with the murder of Khadeem Anderson. The suspect was identified as 36-year-old Carlos Lysius of Coney Island. According to police reports, surveillance footage showed Lysius engaging in the argument with Anderson, then briefly exiting the store before re-entering and shooting him. Following his arrest, Carlos Lysius was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
