Scottie McCoy, a 44-year-old man from Lubbock, Texas, tragically passed away on August 14, 2014. He and his wife, Monica McCoy, 36, were involved in a shooting incident at their home in the 4800 block of Detroit Avenue in Central Lubbock. The incident was determined to be a murder-suicide. Scottie McCoy was pronounced dead at University Medical Center, while Monica McCoy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Prior to the incident, Scottie McCoy had a history of domestic violence.
In 2009, he was charged with a class A misdemeanor domestic assault for allegedly striking his wife during an argument. The case was later dismissed in 2010 after McCoy pleaded down to a class C misdemeanor assault charge, paid a $100 fine, and completed an eight-hour domestic violence course along with parenting and anger management classes.
The Lubbock Police Department responded to a shots fired call around 6:10 p.m. on the day of the incident and found both Scottie and Monica McCoy suffering from gunshot wounds. Scottie McCoy was taken by EMS to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Monica McCoy was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation revealed that Scottie McCoy was the suspect, and Monica McCoy was the victim. The police did not find any other suspects and the motive for the shooting remained unclear.
The tragic incident left behind three daughters, Morgan McCoy, Amber McCoy, and Jayda McCoy, all of Lubbock, as well as two grandchildren. Monica McCoy also had two other children, Raven Williams and Jonathan Granado, both of Sweetwater, and four grandchildren. Scottie McCoy was survived by six brothers and one sister, and Monica McCoy was survived by three brothers and seven sisters.
The case was treated as a murder-suicide, and no further arrests or suspects were identified. The investigation concluded with the determination that Scottie McCoy was responsible for the shooting. The incident highlighted the serious issue of domestic violence and its tragic consequences.
