Severo Losoya, a 55-year-old Hispanic male from Lubbock, Texas, was tragically killed on October 21, 2022. The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. in the 200 block of North Avenue R, where Losoya was found with a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to University Medical Center but was later pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, but it was reported that Losoya was standing near his vehicle on the sidewalk when he was shot.
The investigation
into Losoya's death led to the identification of 42-year-old Alvin Flores as the suspect. Flores, who was already in custody at the Lubbock County Detention Center on unrelated charges, was charged with Losoya's murder on November 1, 2022. Flores had been arrested on October 25, 2022, for speeding and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Additional charges against Flores included aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, evading arrest, resisting arrest, taking a weapon from an officer, and interfering with public duties.
Court documents revealed that evidence from a previous shots-fired incident on October 12, 2022, led police to Flores. Shell casings found at the scene of Losoya's murder matched those from the earlier incident. During an interview with police, Flores initially claimed that a friend had borrowed his car and committed the murder. However, he later admitted to meeting Losoya to buy drugs and claimed that the shooting was in self-defense after Losoya allegedly threatened him with a knife. Witnesses in Flores' vehicle did not corroborate his account of being threatened, and a closed knife was found in Losoya's pocket.
The investigation into Losoya's murder is ongoing, and Flores remains in custody at the Lubbock County Detention Center with bonds totaling $874,000. The case has drawn attention to the violent crime in the area and the need for continued efforts to address public safety concerns.
