On August 25, 2024, 17-year-old Dalequavion Barnard York tragically lost his life in a shooting at an after-hours club located in the 9200 block of Highway 87, south of Lubbock, Texas. The incident, which occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m., also resulted in injuries to five other individuals.

Surveillance footage from the scene revealed that multiple individuals were involved in the altercation. Among them, 18-year-old Dazaun Jones and 19-year-old Lavarius Scott were observed firing into a crowd, specifically targeting York and 23-year-old Christen Nelson. Both York and Nelson returned fire; however, York attempted to flee and collapsed, succumbing to a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Nelson sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was later apprehended at University Medical Center.

In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement arrested several suspects. Jones, Scott, Nelson, 22-year-old Byron Hawkins Jr., and 27-year-old Joshua Price were taken into custody and charged with deadly conduct by discharging a firearm. Subsequent investigations led to additional charges. Jones was indicted for murder and seven counts of aggravated assault—mass shooting, marking the first time this specific charge was filed in Lubbock since its enactment in September 2023. Nelson, Scott, and Price also faced multiple counts of aggravated assault related to the mass shooting.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. Testimonies during court proceedings suggested a history of threats between York and Jones, possibly linked to a prior shooting incident in June 2024. Jones' defense attorney argued that his client acted in self-defense during the altercation at the after-hours club. As the legal process continues, the community awaits further clarity on the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
