On January 19, 2025, Bronnie Paul Vaughn, a 55-year-old man, was found dead from gunshot wounds at a residence in Lubbock, Texas. Vaughn had been temporarily staying at the home of Paxton Kubica, a 48-year-old man who was later arrested in connection with the shooting. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, prompting a response from the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities discovered Vaughn’s body along with another victim, 37-year-old Jorge Alberto Moreno Deleon, who had sustained gunshot wounds to his torso and lower body. Deleon was transported to University Medical Center for treatment.
Kubica, who lived at the residence with his girlfriend, 36-year-old Caitlynn Bryant, had reportedly become paranoid about Vaughn, Deleon, and another roommate. According to court records, Kubica believed the three men were "up to something weird" and feared for Bryant’s safety. In response to these suspicions, Kubica allegedly retrieved a handgun and began shooting. He first targeted Vaughn, though he later stated he could not recall how many times he fired. He then shot Deleon, who reportedly shouted, "You shot me, Paxton!" before collapsing.
A third roommate, who was in the restroom at the time, heard multiple gunshots before Kubica ordered him out of the room. Kubica allegedly pointed a gun at the man’s head and told him, "You're going to die." However, after a brief exchange, Kubica instructed the man to call 911 to request medical assistance for Deleon. Meanwhile, Bryant, who had been asleep during the shooting, was awakened by the sound of gunfire. Kubica entered their bedroom and reportedly told her, "I'm sorry."
Law enforcement officers, including a SWAT team, arrived at the scene and established contact with Kubica, who had barricaded himself inside a bedroom with Bryant. After negotiations, Bryant was allowed to leave the room, and Kubica surrendered to authorities approximately 20 minutes later. He was taken into custody and charged with one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Kubica remains held at the Lubbock County Detention Center with a bond set at $200,000.
Further investigations revealed that Kubica had a prior criminal history, including a 1996 attempted murder case in which he and an accomplice kidnapped a Texas Tech student, shot him between the eyes, and left him for dead. The victim survived and was able to seek help. Kubica was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison but was released in 2016. His past criminal record has resurfaced in light of the recent murder charges, raising concerns about his history of violent behavior.
