Christopher Castillo, an 18-year-old male from Lubbock, Texas, tragically died on May 4, 2021, from a gunshot wound to the chest. Castillo was shot outside the South Plains Mall in the parking lot during an outdoor carnival. The incident occurred in the evening, and Castillo was later pronounced dead at University Medical Center.
The investigation led to the arrest of Jake Zachariah Canales, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting.
Canales was initially charged with theft of a firearm on May 6, 2021, after he admitted to stealing a gun from Castillo as "payback" for money Castillo allegedly stole from him. Witnesses reported that Castillo and his friends were taking pictures with a gun, and Canales claimed Castillo grabbed him from behind before he heard a gunshot and saw Castillo fall to the ground.
Canales was later charged with murder on June 24, 2021, after a juvenile witness told police that Canales admitted to shooting Castillo and said he "should have shot at the ground". Canales remained in the Lubbock County Detention Center on bonds totaling $650,000. In November 2023, Canales pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The case drew significant attention due to the circumstances of the shooting and the subsequent legal proceedings. The community mourned the loss of Castillo, and his family and friends remembered him through an online memorial and funeral services held in his honor.
