In the summer of 2018, the life of 16-year-old Latrell Brown was tragically cut short on a street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. On the afternoon of July 11th, the promising young man was walking with his girlfriend when an encounter with another teenager turned fatal. After a brief exchange of words, Latrell was shot in the head. First responders found him unconscious and unresponsive at the scene on Macon Street.
He was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Latrell was a student at Brooklyn Law and Technical High School, where he was about to begin his senior year. He was known for his love of basketball and his talent on the court, playing as a shooting guard for both his high school team and the Brooklyn Ballers. His coach and teammates remembered him as an inspiration and a motivator, and his family described him as a loving and funny person who also enjoyed cooking. His mother, Michelle Armstrong, expressed her profound grief and disbelief, stating that she was not supposed to be burying her son.
The investigation into Latrell's death quickly led to a suspect, 17-year-old Justin Delapara. Surveillance footage from a nearby restaurant reportedly captured Delapara firing a gun before fleeing the scene. He was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Police believed the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the two teenagers.
In May 2022, Justin Delapara, then 21, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The following month, he was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison. At the sentencing, Latrell Brown's loved ones gathered at the Brooklyn Supreme Court, still grappling with the senseless loss of a young life full of potential. The district attorney remarked on the devastating impact of Latrell's death on his family, friends, and classmates, hoping the sentence would bring them some measure of solace.
