In the heart of Brooklyn, on a brisk November evening in 1907, the life of 30-year-old Patrolman Edward Kavanagh came to a sudden and violent end. The night of November 14th began with a brazen street robbery. A young woman’s handbag was snatched, and the thief fled into the dimly lit streets. A courageous citizen gave chase, tackling the suspect on Gold Street.
In the ensuing struggle, the robber brandished a revolver and fired a wild shot that, while missing its mark, echoed through the neighborhood and drew the attention of the nearby Kavanagh.
Responding to the sound of the gunshot, Patrolman Kavanagh rushed to the scene and confronted the armed man. A struggle for control of the weapon followed, during which the suspect fired again, this time striking the officer. The assailant, an Italian immigrant named Giacomo Guisto, broke free and disappeared into the darkness, leaving the mortally wounded officer on the cold pavement. As Kavanagh lay dying, another citizen, demonstrating remarkable bravery, picked up the fallen officer's revolver and continued the pursuit. With the help of other citizens, he cornered and apprehended Guisto, ensuring he would face justice for his crime.
Edward Kavanagh was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital, but his wounds proved fatal. His death, in the line of duty after only two years with the New York City Police Department, sent ripples of grief and outrage through the community. The man responsible for cutting short the young officer's life, Giacomo Guisto, was put on trial for murder. The evidence against him was overwhelming, and a jury swiftly returned a guilty verdict.
The legal process moved forward, and Guisto was sentenced to death. On January 3, 1910, a little over two years after he had so tragically ended Patrolman Kavanagh's life, Giacomo Guisto was executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison. The final chapter in this grim tale had been written, but for the family and colleagues of Edward Kavanagh, the loss of a dedicated officer and a man in the prime of his life would linger on.
