On a Monday afternoon, February 24, 2020, the life of 35-year-old James Suggs was tragically cut short in the Farragut Houses complex in Brooklyn, New York. Responding to a 911 call at approximately 3:30 p.m., police discovered Suggs on the first floor of a building on Sands Street, unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his face. He was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead.
At the time of the incident, it was reported that Suggs, who lived nearby, may have been in the building to visit his son.
Initially, no arrests were made in the fatal shooting, and the investigation was ongoing as detectives sought to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. The community was left seeking answers in the wake of the violence that had claimed a life.
Several months later, in July 2020, a breakthrough in the case was announced with the arrest of 21-year-old Nysaiah Luster. Luster, also a resident of Sands Street, was taken into custody and charged in connection with the death of James Suggs. The charges against him included murder, criminally negligent homicide, assault, menacing, and reckless endangerment.
