In the autumn of 2021, a burst of gunfire on a Brooklyn street set in motion a tragedy that would end a young man's life nearly a month later. On the night of October 15, police responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting in front of 2055 Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie. There they found Jamere Jones, an 18-year-old male, with a gunshot wound to his back.
Emergency services rushed him to NYC Health & Hospitals/Kings County for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Jamere Jones succumbed to his injuries on November 11, 2021. His death was officially ruled a homicide by the police. In the wake of the violence that claimed the young man's life, the community of Canarsie came together to denounce the persistent issue of gun violence. Residents gathered outside the Bayview Houses, where Jones was shot, calling for fully funded anti-gun violence initiatives and remembering not only Jones but all young lives lost to such acts.
The investigation into the shooting was ongoing following the incident. At the time of the reports in late 2021, no arrests had been made in connection with the fatal shooting.
