In the late morning of May 29, 2022, a brutal act of violence cut short the life of 31-year-old Waleek Watford, a Black male from Queens. The incident unfolded inside the lobby of the Langston Hughes Houses, a public housing complex on Sutter Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. Police officers from the 73rd Precinct responded to a 911 call and discovered Watford with multiple gunshot wounds to his shoulder and torso, as well as stab wounds to his lower back.
Emergency
medical services arrived at the scene and transported Watford to Brookdale University Hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead a short time later. The violent nature of the attack, involving both a firearm and a blade, suggested a deeply personal and aggressive confrontation.
At the time of the initial reports, the New York City Police Department had not made any arrests in connection with the murder, and no suspects had been publicly identified. The investigation into the killing was ongoing. While details about the motive for the attack remained scarce, it was noted that Watford had a history of arrests for violent felonies.
