In the late afternoon of a summer day in Brooklyn, tragedy struck 54-year-old Darryl McMillan. On August 21, 2024, at approximately 3:40 p.m., McMillan, a Black man from Queens, was near the PO Reinaldo Salgado Playground on Monroe Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood when he was fatally shot in the chest. Emergency responders rushed him to Kings County Hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

McMillan was staying with a friend in Brooklyn. A construction accident had left him unable to work, and he was residing at his friend's home on Monroe Street, close to where the shooting occurred. The circumstances that led to the fatal encounter are still being investigated by authorities, and a clear motive has not yet been publicly disclosed. The incident was initially reported to police as an assault in progress.
Following the shooting, the New York Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. A 15-year-old male named Jameir Perry was arrested in connection with McMillan's death. Perry, who had a previous arrest on robbery charges in April 2024, was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was subsequently arraigned and is being held without bail.
