On a Monday evening in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, a 24-year-old Queens man named Brandon Dubois was fatally shot. The incident occurred on May 20, 2024, in front of a residence at 968 Myrtle Avenue. Responding to a 911 call around 8:23 p.m., officers from the 79th Precinct discovered Dubois with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
He was rushed by emergency services to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses at the scene reported a startling detail: the assailant was riding a Citi Bike when they opened fire on Dubois. The suspect was described as wearing a dark hoodie and blue jeans. Despite a search of the area, which yielded four shell casings, the gunman had fled. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the police investigation remains active.
In the months leading up to his death, Dubois had been involved with The BRO Project, a program designed to support young men who are disconnected from school and their community. He had completed the program and received his certificate just three days before he was killed. Those who knew him from the program remembered him as a dedicated participant with a talent for drawing and painting.
Dubois had a criminal history, having previously served over three years in prison for gun possession in Brooklyn. He was conditionally released in November 2022, and his post-release supervision had ended in April 2024, the month before his death. He also had a recent arrest in March for unauthorized use of a vehicle and misdemeanor possession of crack cocaine.
