In the early morning hours of a summer day in East New York, Brooklyn, a single gunshot shattered the quiet, marking the tragic end for 33-year-old Tjine Hemans. On June 4, 2023, at approximately 12:20 a.m., police responded to a 911 call and discovered Hemans near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Wortman Avenue with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest.
Emergency responders rushed him to Brookdale University Hospital, but his life could not be saved.
A resident of Queens, Hemans had recently embraced fatherhood, with his child being only four months old at the time of his death. His mother, Evett Newton, expressed her profound grief, lamenting that the baby now had to grow up without a father. She described her son as a doting parent who had been overjoyed about his new role. The community was left to mourn a man they remembered as a dedicated father with a bright future ahead of him, his life cut short by an act of violence.
