On March 17, 1979, Charles Padnick, a 50-year-old male, met a brutal end in Brooklyn, New York. Padnick, along with William Serrano and two other unidentified men, had traveled to the city to orchestrate a significant cocaine transaction with the notorious DeMeo Crew, a faction of the Gambino crime family. The deal, however, took a deadly turn.
Instead of a lucrative exchange, Padnick and his associates were shot and subsequently dismembered by members of the crew.
This gruesome method of disposing of their victims was a signature of the DeMeo Crew, led by the infamous Roy DeMeo. The crew was a dominant force in a variety of criminal enterprises during the late 1970s and early 1980s, including drug trafficking, loan sharking, and murder.
The violence did not end with Charles Padnick. In the wake of his father's disappearance, James Padnick traveled to New York in search of answers. Tragically, his quest led him to the same fate. On March 19, 1979, James was also murdered and dismembered by the DeMeo Crew.
An extensive law enforcement investigation was launched into the murders and the broader criminal activities of the DeMeo Crew. This eventually led to the arrests and prosecutions of several members of the notorious crew. Roy DeMeo, the crew's leader, was indicted on numerous charges, including murder and racketeering. The investigation and subsequent trials exposed the brutal and violent operations of this organized crime syndicate.
