On August 12, 2023, at approximately 2:45 a.m., 29-year-old Dawuand Darrien was fatally shot in the chest at the Vernon Houses, a NYCHA apartment building on Vernon Avenue near Marcus Garvey Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. First responders found Darrien in the lobby and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
