On a tragic afternoon in Rochester, New York, 18-year-old Devin Michael Barstow, a White male, was fatally shot on October 7, 2024. The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. in the rear parking lot of Charles T. Lunsford School No. 19 on Seward Street. Despite suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Barstow managed to run approximately 200 yards to the porch of a vacant house on Flint Street, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
His body was discovered by a passerby about two hours later, who then alerted the authorities.
Rochester police investigators noted that Barstow had no known connection to the school where the shooting occurred. Initially, the motive for the shooting was reported as unclear. His death marked the 42nd homicide in the city of Rochester for the year 2024. The community and his family, including his parents Erik Barstow and Jennifer Saucke, and his sister Destiny Barstow, were left mourning the sudden and violent loss of a young man remembered for his kindness and compassion.
In a significant development, a 16-year-old male, Ramell Griffin, was arrested in connection with Barstow's death. Griffin has been charged with second-degree murder, assault, and a gun crime. Authorities have stated that Barstow was shot during a robbery outside the Flint Street Rec Center. At the time of his arrest for the homicide, Griffin was already in custody for an alleged car theft. He is awaiting further court proceedings.
