In a senseless act of violence stemming from a traffic dispute, 26-year-old Willie Curry, a male resident of Rochester, New York, was fatally shot on April 21, 2018. The tragic encounter unfolded on Sidney Street in the city, where a simple honk of a car horn escalated into a fatal confrontation.
The incident began as a road rage dispute when several individuals involved in the altercation produced handguns and a shootout ensued.
During the exchange of gunfire, Willie Curry was struck once in the lower body. He was discovered lying in the middle of the road and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The swift investigation by the Rochester Police Department led to the arrest of Theotis Davis Jr. later that same evening.
Theotis Davis Jr., who was 29 years old at the time, was charged with the murder of Willie Curry. Prosecutors detailed how Davis fired his handgun multiple times during the dispute, with one of the shots fatally wounding Curry. In November 2018, a Monroe County jury convicted Davis of Murder in the Second Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. Assistant District Attorney Kyle Steinebach, who prosecuted the case, described the killing as a 'completely senseless act of violence.'
Following his conviction, Theotis Davis Jr. faced a lengthy prison sentence for his actions. On December 19, 2018, he was sentenced to a term of 21 years to life in the New York State Department of Corrections. The Monroe County District Attorney, Sandra Doorley, stated that Davis 'showed a complete disregard for human life' and commended the Rochester Police Department and the prosecutor for bringing justice to Willie Curry and his family.
