On a summer evening in Rochester, New York, 22-year-old Brandon McClary’s life was cut short in a burst of gunfire. The incident occurred around 7:00 PM on June 17, 2021, at the intersection of Genesee and Sawyer streets. When Rochester Police Officers arrived at the scene, they discovered McClary suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, but the severity of his injuries proved fatal, and he succumbed to them.
The investigation that
followed the daylight shooting led the Rochester Police Department to identify Troy Jones as the individual who had chased down and shot McClary. Jones was apprehended by authorities just days after the homicide. The investigation also implicated another man, Dayvon Dunbar, in McClary's death, and he was arrested the following month. A third man, Willie Shipmon, was also charged in connection with the fatal shooting.
The legal process brought a degree of closure for Brandon McClary's family. Troy Jones pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the 1st Degree and, in June 2024, was sentenced to 25 years in the New York State Department of Corrections, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. Dayvon Dunbar also pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the 1st Degree for his role in the killing and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The case against the third man, Willie Shipmon, concluded differently; his murder trial ended in a mistrial due to juror misconduct, and an appellate court ruled that he could not be retried on the same charges.
