In the spring of 2022, a young man's life was cut short in a fatal shooting in Rochester, New York. Jeremy Hamilton Jr., a 21-year-old male, was shot on April 9, 2022. The incident unfolded in the vicinity of Harris Street and Avenue A, where police were called to investigate reports of gunfire.
Upon their arrival, officers found that Hamilton had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body in the 100 block of Avenue A. He was then driven to the corner of St.
Paul Street and Clifford Avenue, where he was discovered by first responders. Hamilton was quickly transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His death marked the 18th homicide in the city that year.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify Trevor Smith III, a 24-year-old from Rochester, as the primary suspect. Investigators determined that the shooting was drug-related. Shortly after the incident, Smith, who had a previous felony conviction and was on probation, fled to Texas.
A coordinated effort between the Rochester police and the U.S. Marshals Violent Felony Fugitive Task Force led to Smith's apprehension in Harris County, Texas. He was extradited back to Monroe County to face charges of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
In July 2023, a Monroe County Court jury found Trevor Smith III guilty on all charges. The prosecution emphasized Smith's decision to carry a firearm while on probation, which ultimately led to Hamilton's death. In August 2023, Smith was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison for the murder of Jeremy Hamilton Jr.
