In the summer of 2020, a verbal dispute on a Rochester, New York street tragically escalated, leading to the death of 35-year-old Trenton Cook, a Black male. On the evening of June 14th, Cook was outside of his apartment building on North Clinton Avenue when he became embroiled in an argument with a neighbor, 28-year-old Eddie Williams.
The heated exchange took a fatal turn when Williams went into his apartment and returned with a shotgun. He then fired at Cook, inflicting mortal wounds.
The Rochester Police Department responded to the scene and quickly identified Williams as the suspect, taking him into custody shortly after the shooting.
Williams was initially charged with murder, but the legal proceedings saw the charge amended. On October 1, 2021, Williams pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in the first degree for his role in Trenton Cook's death. This plea was part of an agreement that resulted in a significant prison sentence.
In December of 2021, a judge sentenced Eddie Williams to 20 years in state prison. Following his release, he will be subject to five years of post-release supervision. The resolution of the court case brought a measure of finality to the tragic and sudden loss of Trenton Cook's life, a consequence of a senseless act of violence that began with a simple argument.
