Kenneth Johnson Jr., 26, a Black man from Rochester, New York, was spending the late evening of August 9, 2022, at his home on Roycroft Drive when the night cracked open with gunfire. Police were called to the 300 block near Carter Street at about 10:30 p.m. after reports of shots, and they found Johnson inside the house with gunshot wounds as others were nearby.
Medics rushed him to Strong Memorial Hospital, but he died a short time later, leaving family and neighbors to absorb yet another sudden loss amid a summer of escalating violence.
In the first hours after the shooting, the scene on Roycroft Drive was a swirl of flashing lights and unanswered questions. Investigators described it as an active homicide investigation, one of a string of killings that had tightened fear and grief across the city. The death was reported as Rochester’s 48th homicide of the year, and it arrived during a stretch in which the city had recorded multiple homicides in only a few days, sharpening the sense that the violence was not just persistent but accelerating.
Within two days, police said the investigation had coalesced around a suspect: Christopher Williams, a parolee they described as a parole absconder. According to investigators, Johnson had been outside with several people when Williams was present and an altercation erupted; police said the conflict escalated quickly, ending with Johnson being shot multiple times. Those early accounts painted the killing not as a random street ambush, but as an argument that turned fatal in a place that should have been safe—his own home.
Williams was arrested on August 10, 2022, at a residence in Irondequoit by the U.S. Marshals’ Violent Felony Fugitive Task Force, authorities said. Prosecutors charged him with two counts of second-degree murder and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon, tying the Roycroft Drive homicide to another Rochester killing from the previous month. In court, Williams pleaded not guilty at arraignment. In September 2022, reports said he was indicted on two second-degree murder charges and additional weapons counts connected to the paired homicides.
Public reporting later showed the companion case continued to move: in July 2023, Williams was sentenced to 23 years in state prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the killing of Marcus Bennett, the other homicide that had been bundled with Johnson’s in early charging documents. That sentencing underscored what investigators and prosecutors had argued from the start—that Williams had been out in the community despite repeated parole trouble, and that arguments he stepped into could become lethal in seconds.
