On January 21, 2023, Michael Mathis, a 25-year-old resident of Gates, New York, was fatally shot in Rochester's East End bar district. The incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. at the intersection of East Avenue and North Union Street. Officers patrolling the area heard multiple gunshots and discovered Mathis suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot. He was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
