On a summer evening in Rochester, New York, 24-year-old Markis Ortiz-Harris was waiting in his car to start his shift at the Amazon Fulfillment Center on Manitou Road. It was July 24, 2025, a day that would end in tragedy. As he sat in the parking lot, a man approached his vehicle. That man, later identified as 28-year-old Luis Ortiz-Vega, was known to Ortiz-Harris.
The encounter in the parking lot was not a random act of violence but rather the culmination of a personal dispute.
According to police, the two men had an ongoing 'beef'. Court documents later revealed that the conflict was linked to a woman with whom both men had a relationship. Just days before the fatal shooting, Ortiz-Vega had allegedly threatened to kill both Ortiz-Harris and the woman after seeing a video of Ortiz-Harris on her phone.
In the moments before the shooting, Ortiz-Harris's brother was in the passenger seat and witnessed the confrontation. He told police that his brother attempted to reason with Ortiz-Vega. When the brother tried to roll up his window, Ortiz-Vega allegedly grabbed it, holding a black pistol. As Ortiz-Harris tried to drive away, his brother struck the assailant with a wrench, but it was too late. Ortiz-Vega opened fire, fatally wounding Markis Ortiz-Harris. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Immediately following the shooting, Luis Ortiz-Vega fled the state, sparking a month-long manhunt. Investigators, however, identified him as the primary suspect early in the investigation. After receiving a tip that he had returned to Rochester, law enforcement, including the U.S. Marshals' fugitive task force, located him. Ortiz-Vega was arrested without incident during a traffic stop on Union Street in Rochester. He has since been charged with second-degree murder and was arraigned in court.
