In the early hours of a spring day in Rochester, New York, the life of 22-year-old Renard Small was cut tragically short. On the morning of April 29, 2015, police discovered Small, a Black / African American male, deceased inside his vehicle, which had crashed into a tree at the intersection of Post Avenue and Sawyer Street. It was soon determined that Small had been shot multiple times while driving, leading to the fatal crash.
This violent act marked the city's 12th homicide of the year, sending ripples of concern through the community.
The investigation into Small's death swiftly led authorities to a person of interest. John Gordon, a 20-year-old man, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting. Investigators revealed that Gordon was a passenger in Small's car at the time of the incident. The evidence against Gordon was substantial, including multiple videos that showed him and Small together at various locations leading up to the shooting. Furthermore, cellphone data and GPS information placed Gordon at the scene of the crime. Despite the evidence presented, Gordon pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

It came to light that Renard Small had been the victim of a previous shooting in February of the same year, in which he had been shot in the face. Authorities explored the possibility of a connection between the two incidents, trying to piece together the events that culminated in Small's death.
