On a Saturday evening in the Bronx, the life of 17-year-old Xavier Navarez was tragically cut short. The high school senior, a male with a promising future, was looking forward to his graduation and was already taking steps to launch his own clothing line. His family described him as a funny and smart young man, excited about what lay ahead and meticulously planning his business venture by looking into fabrics and materials.
The fatal incident occurred on November 9, 2024, at
approximately 7:45 p.m. in the Mott Haven neighborhood. Navarez was on Oak Terrace, less than a mile from his home, when a man allegedly emerged from a building and fired about ten shots in his direction. Navarez was struck multiple times in the back. Emergency services were called, and police officers who arrived at the scene found the teenager critically wounded. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead later that night.
The day after the shooting, a suspect turned himself in to the authorities. James Walker, a 34-year-old man who lived in the building outside of which the shooting took place, was arrested and subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. Reports indicate that Walker knew Xavier Navarez, though a motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed. Investigators recovered a 9mm pistol in a bag behind the building.
Following his arrest, James Walker was indicted on the charges. He was arraigned before a Bronx Supreme Court Justice and is scheduled to be back in court in March 2025. While the legal process moves forward, the family and friends of Xavier Navarez are left to mourn the loss of a young life filled with potential, his aspirations of becoming a fashion entrepreneur forever unrealized.
