In the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx, on the afternoon of July 14, 2023, the life of 28-year-old Denzel Plummer, a Black male, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded just before 4 p.m. near his home, directly across the street from the Bronx Hall of Justice. Plummer was outside an apartment building on East 161st Street when a black SUV carrying two individuals pulled up.
One man exited the vehicle, drew a weapon, and fired, striking Plummer in the chest.
The assailants quickly fled the scene in their vehicle, heading down Morris Avenue. Emergency services were called, and first responders arrived to find Plummer with a severe gunshot wound. He was rushed to the nearby NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police believe the shooting stemmed from some kind of dispute, though the specifics of what led to the fatal encounter remain unclear.
In the days that followed, the New York Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to a significant breakthrough less than two weeks after the shooting. On July 27, 2023, authorities arrested 32-year-old Paulin Utshudi of Hopewell Junction, NY, in connection with the killing. Utshudi was subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, and illegal possession of a firearm for his alleged role in the death of Denzel Plummer.
