On May 22, 2023, at approximately 3 a.m., Kansas City police responded to reports of gunfire at the Canyon Creek Apartments near 93rd Street and Bales Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 24-year-old Nykolett Schroeder lying in the breezeway of an apartment building, suffering from critical gunshot wounds. She was immediately transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a few hours later.
