On a summer morning in Kansas City, Missouri, the life of a 62-year-old man, Raymond R. Smith, was brought to a violent and sudden end. It was around 11:15 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2023, when the sharp sound of gunfire pierced the ordinary quiet of the 3800 block of Bales Avenue. A resident, startled by the noise, glanced out of their window and witnessed a grim scene unfolding: a man lying motionless on the ground.
