On May 17, 2020, a violent altercation took place in the early morning hours outside a convenience store in the Blue Summit area near Kansas City, Missouri, resulting in the death of 36-year-old Jason Juszczyk. The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. at the Truman Mart gas station located at 8301 East Truman Road. Juszczyk, a male resident of Independence, was at the location when he became involved in a heated argument with a teenager outside the business.
Witnesses and
surveillance footage from the scene depicted a confrontation between Juszczyk and a group of individuals. During the dispute, Juszczyk reportedly engaged physically with one of the individuals, grabbing him by the neck and pushing him against a wall. In response to this physical struggle, the other individual produced a firearm and discharged it multiple times, striking Juszczyk in the torso. The shooter and three other associates immediately fled the scene on foot following the gunfire.
Emergency responders arrived to find Juszczyk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office led the investigation, releasing images of persons of interest to the public in an effort to identify those involved. Two days after the shooting, on a Tuesday, 17-year-old Camryn Wilkins of Independence surrendered to authorities at the Jackson County detention center.
Prosecutors charged Wilkins with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Juszczyk's death. The charging documents described the escalating argument and the fatal shooting that followed. Juszczyk was remembered by his community as a dedicated father of two and a local musician who played in the band Grapple the Sun.
