On a Sunday afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 14, 2014, 25-year-old Terez Marvell Racy was fatally shot while sitting in his car. The incident occurred in the 2000 block of East 37th Street. After being shot multiple times, Racy was driven to a local hospital in a private vehicle, where he was pronounced dead.
A witness who was with Racy at the time of the shooting told police that a suspect approached the vehicle, opened fire, and then fled the scene.
Investigations led by the Kansas City Police Department swiftly identified a suspect. Within days of the shooting, prosecutors charged 19-year-old Carlos L. Robertson with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Racy's death.
According to court records, the witness who was present during the incident later identified Robertson in a photo lineup. Further investigation revealed that the last call made from Terez Racy's phone was to a contact listed as 'Los.' The phone number associated with this contact was the same number that Robertson had provided to his probation officer as his own. Authorities also discovered Racy's contact information on Robertson's phone. A witness reported seeing a male running from the crime scene with a gun in the pocket of a gray hoodie. The shooter reportedly took something from the vehicle after the shooting. Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000 for Robertson.
