On the evening of November 16, 2023, violence erupted at the Blue Ridge Crossing shopping center in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 26-year-old Marquise L. Rose, a Black male. Officers were dispatched to the scene near 42nd Street and Sterling Avenue shortly after 9:20 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene spanning separate parking lots within the complex.
Rose was found unresponsive near a business and was pronounced dead at the location by first responders, marking a grim addition to the city's homicide statistics for the year.
The incident also claimed a second life, that of 17-year-old DeMarcus Anthony Houston Jr., who was discovered a short distance away from where Rose lay. Emergency medical personnel transported the teenager to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. A third individual, whose identity was not released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the shooting and was taken to a hospital by a private vehicle. Marquise Rose, affectionately known to his loved ones as 'Quisie' or 'Big Quise,' was remembered as a devoted father and a 'protector' of his family. Born in 1997 to parents Tyree Rose and Jessica Doyal, he had attended schools in the Kansas City area and later worked as an entrepreneur. His untimely death left behind two children, his parents, and several siblings, all of whom mourned the loss of a man who took his role as a big brother and uncle seriously.
