In the early morning hours of November 28, 2021, officers from the Kansas City Police Department responded to a call reporting a shooting in the 4100 block of Montgall Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene just after 2:00 a.m., they discovered 32-year-old male Jamell Hornbeck lying unresponsive in the street. He was suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds and was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Hornbeck was placed on life support in
critical condition as medical staff worked to save his life. Despite their efforts, his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to his wounds more than a week later on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. Detectives were notified of his passing, and the case was subsequently classified as a homicide, contributing to the city's murder statistics for that year.
As of late 2022, the investigation into the shooting remained active but unsolved. Police had not announced any arrests or identified any public suspects in connection with the killing. Authorities continued to appeal to the community for information, urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact the homicide unit or the local TIPS Hotline to assist in bringing closure to the case.
Known to his friends and family as 'Melly,' Hornbeck was a father of four and a twin who had attended Westport High School. He was a dedicated musician who used his art for self-expression, having recorded multiple albums that showcased his talent for creative wordplay. His death left a significant void in the lives of his mother, twin brother, children, and extended family, who gathered to mourn his loss at a service held at Watkins Heritage Chapel.
