In the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, a long-simmering dispute between neighbors erupted into a fatal encounter, claiming the life of 41-year-old Warner Trotter Jr.. A Black real estate investor and father of six, Trotter was shot on the front porch of his home on August 7, 2022, a tragic culmination of a decade-long feud with his neighbor.

On that fateful Sunday, the argument reignited, with police having been called to the residences twice that day regarding the suspect mowing his lawn too early in the morning. The verbal altercations escalated, and though the specific words exchanged in the final moments vary in witness accounts, the outcome was irreversible.
Later that day, as Trotter returned home with a female companion, he and his neighbor, Samuel Avery, exchanged words once more. A witness reported hearing Trotter ask Avery something to the effect of, 'Do you have something to say?' before several gunshots rang out.. Avery, who had called the police himself earlier in the day, contacted dispatch after the shooting, admitting he had shot his neighbor and informing them where he had placed his weapon.
When authorities arrived at the 3500 block of Garfield Avenue, they found Trotter on his porch with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Avery was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Though Trotter was armed at the time of the shooting, a witness stated that the weapon was concealed and never brandished.. Security footage from Trotter's home reportedly showed him speaking to Avery before turning to enter his house, at which point Avery fired multiple shots. The video evidence indicated that Trotter did not reach for his weapon.
Samuel Avery, 42 at the time, was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Warner Trotter's death. Prosecutors requested a cash bond of $200,000. Avery informed investigators that the arguments with Trotter had been ongoing for a decade.
