Early on the morning of Saturday, March 23, 2024, Kansas City police officers were dispatched to the 28th Terrace and Cleveland Avenue area following reports of gunfire. Arriving around 1:45 a.m., first responders discovered a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was found lying in a wooded section adjacent to a parking lot in the northeast neighborhood of the city.
Officers rendered aid at the scene before Emergency Medical Services transported him to a nearby hospital for urgent care.
Despite medical efforts, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Authorities later identified him as 29-year-old Lawrence D. Pickett. The incident marked the city's 30th homicide of the year. Initial investigations by the Kansas City Police Department suggested the shooting stemmed from an interaction between Pickett and an unknown individual that escalated into violence, leading the suspect to open fire.
