On July 16, 2022, a violent sequence of events unfolded in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 34-year-old male Marvin Dewayne Yancy Jr. The incident began in the early morning hours when police officers were dispatched around 12:50 a.m. to the intersection of East 83rd Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard following reports of gunfire. Despite their arrival, officers were initially unable to locate a crime scene or a victim, and the call was determined to be unfounded at that time.
It was not until approximately ten hours later, at 10:30 a.m., that authorities were called back to the vicinity, this time to the 8200 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard regarding a vehicular accident involving a Chevy Tahoe that had crashed into a tree in a residential yard.
Upon investigating the crash site, first responders discovered the male victim inside the SUV, deceased from fatal gunshot wounds rather than injuries sustained from the collision itself. Investigators observed that the front passenger-side window of the vehicle had been shattered and identified a bullet hole in the window frame, indicating the driver had been targeted while operating the vehicle. The discovery launched a homicide investigation that utilized city traffic cameras and private surveillance footage to piece together the events leading up to the crash. Detectives were able to identify a suspect vehicle with distinctive markings, including silver paint transfer on the bumper, and tracked it using a GPS device installed on the car.
The investigation led law enforcement to Charles F. Miller Jr., a Kansas City man who was 27 years old at the time of the shooting. The GPS data from the suspect vehicle led police to a witness who confirmed being with Miller on the night of the murder and stated that he was armed while driving. Further forensic analysis strengthened the case, as a shell casing recovered from the vehicle Miller had been driving matched the caliber of a rifle found inside the car. Additionally, a spent bullet recovered from the victim's body was determined to have been fired from that same rifle. Miller, who had a prior criminal history that prohibited him from possessing firearms, was arrested and charged in connection with the killing.
In January 2024, a Jackson County jury found Charles Miller Jr. guilty of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of armed criminal action. Prosecutors presented evidence that the shooting was likely the result of a road rage incident. The conviction brought a measure of legal resolution to the case nearly two years after the death of Marvin Dewayne Yancy Jr., who left behind a fiancée and several children, including a son who was born shortly after his father's death. Miller was scheduled for sentencing following his conviction.
