In the early morning hours of March 25, 2024, a workplace dispute in Joplin, Missouri, escalated into a fatal encounter, leaving 37-year-old Travis S. Wyrick, a White male, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident unfolded at Hillbilly Pumping and Hauling, located near Schifferdecker and Zora Road, where Wyrick was employed as a laborer.
Jasper County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:44 a.m.
following reports of a disturbance involving gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Wyrick's body on the property. The initial investigation, aided by witness statements and video footage from the business, suggested that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Wyrick and a coworker, Alex Javier Vega.
According to the probable cause statement, Wyrick and Vega exchanged words shortly after arriving at work that morning. While the initial confrontation was not physical, the situation took a deadly turn. Following the verbal dispute, Vega reportedly went to his work vehicle, which was parked about 100 feet from the office, and retrieved an AR-style rifle. As Vega walked back towards Wyrick with the weapon, Wyrick began shouting and moved toward him. Vega then fired multiple shots, striking Wyrick three times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators identified and interviewed all individuals involved. Initially, no immediate arrests were made as the investigation was ongoing. However, this changed when the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's Office filed charges against Alex Javier Vega. He faces charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. A warrant was issued for his arrest with no bond.
