Patrolman James Sweeney, aged 27, tragically lost his life on April 23, 1901, in Joplin, Missouri. On that fateful day, Patrolman Sweeney, along with Patrolman Bert Brannon, was involved in an incident that led to their untimely deaths. The two officers were on duty, patrolling the Kansas City Railroad yards, when they encountered a group of vagrants. The officers arrested the men and began escorting them to jail.
