In the early morning hours of April 23, 1901, a tragic event unfolded in Joplin, Missouri, that resulted in the death of 27-year-old Patrolman James Sweeney. Sweeney, a male officer with the Joplin Police Department, was involved in the arrest of a group of seven men described as vagrants in the Kansas City Railroad yards.
Alongside Patrolman Bert Brannon and a third officer, Sweeney was escorting the arrested men to the city jail.
As they approached the intersection of Second Street and Main Street, just a short distance from their destination, the situation took a violent turn. One of the men in custody unexpectedly produced a revolver and began shooting. In another account of the incident, it is stated that a number of the men turned on the officers and shot Sweeney with his own firearm.
Both Patrolman Sweeney and Patrolman Brannon were fatally wounded in the attack. While Sweeney died hours after being shot, the group of assailants managed to escape. The individuals responsible for the deaths of the two officers were never identified or apprehended. Patrolman James Sweeney was later buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Joplin.
